St. Joseph Nurses' Association

HISTORY: In 1991, staff nurses at St. Joe's reached a peak frustration level attempting to solve the already inadequate staffing problem with a short-sighted management group. The INA (Illinois Nurses Association) was approached to represent the nearly 600 staff RNs at St. Joe's. After more than seven months of fruitless, frustrating contract talks with St. Joe's, a strike was authorized. About 500 nurses struck for the duration of the 61 day strike. A contract was finally reached which guaranteed four very important processes;
      • Patient Care Committee
      • Labor Management Meetings
      • Discipline for Just Cause
      • Grievance Procedure
