HISTORY:
In 1991, staff nurses at St. Joe's reached a peak frustration level attempting
to solve the already inadequate staffing problem with a short-sighted management
group. The INA (Illinois Nurses Association) was approached to represent
the nearly 600 staff RNs at St. Joe's. After more than seven months of fruitless,
frustrating contract talks with St. Joe's, a strike was authorized. About
500 nurses struck for the duration of the 61 day strike. A contract was
finally reached which guaranteed four very important processes;
